On-line Discussion

I have been using on-line discussion board in my classes. Students show positive attitude towards this learning tool. They find thatit is quite exciting as they learn from each other, known as peer learning. Even I do learn from some of them. They have given a new idea of creating a simple web based database using tools such as SkyDrive. As they are on par with technology updates, the rest of htem can learn from them using this kind of threaded forums.

For my class, I am using a freeware discussion board known Nicenet which looks almost similar toBalckboard system.

Week 1 Learning outcome

wHAT I HAVE LEARNT
Students being producer, examiner and participants

2) Introduction and getting to know each other is very important in elearning. This falls into the socialisation stage

This I learnt from others

a) e-learning is about change

b)To see or not to see

- it's better to put a picture beside the face like viode calls or vidoe conferencing

- picture creates certain level of trust on that person

- as for some not necessary to have real image but a visual image that potrays your character or self. Example - nature, cartoon

- there's a question does phot gives trust. what he perceives is only the age, sex and willingness to share

- a picture can cetainly be intentionally used to give a misleading representation of oneself.
- Trust is associated with information sharing and creates good communication
- by seeing a picture of someone we can begin to develop an idea or impression about that particular person.
- impression can create barriers which can be difficult to break down.
- Use of emoticans, abbreviation, good language and how you say it is important
- person’s picture may bias another individual’s view about that person.
- Level of comfort before participating online
- Non verbal communication in on-line learning
- Netiquette
- tells me that it is in the human condition to want to reduce uncertainty. So a child is born with no limitation to its ability but quickly learns to acnowledge first physical limitations then as it grows it shapes, groups and enumerates its experiences with the intention that as an adult it is happy and well adjusted to its

During week 2 i learnt the importance of choosing the right ice breaker for e-tivities. Ice breaker sets as an opening of online activities and the right ice breaker can determine the students attitude towards their interest. We worked on an ice breaker wihch discusses about participants favourite food. This gives as idea of the person and eases the communication process

during week3 I came accross this online collaborative activity. Our group did a wonderful job by putting our collaborative work on a wiki page and each could pour out their ideas. During the activity we managed to communicate synchronously using the chat facility availabe at moodle site. This gives more room to discussion. And the exchanging inofrmation forum was very useful as participants identified their favourite site that discusses about elearning.

The plenary discussion forum was kind of useful as it reflects on the importance of virtual learning environment and various ideas from participants proves the importance that VLE has and how it could be incorporated into traditional teaching pedagogy.

The summary was an important aspect of online discussion and the emoderators role is very important to summarise the participants contributions.

At the end of the course, the participants were evaluated using the rubric privided and some even altered the rubrics to cater for the relevance of this course. It was kind of difficult experince to evaluate our peer though we dont see them in person.
